Shadowman – Richard Hambleton Publication

Photographs by Vera Isler and Thomas Christ New York/Basel 1980-84

Commonly known as "The Godfather of Street Art," Canadian artist Richard Hambleton (1952-2017) gained fame for his shadow figures that appeared on the walls of buildings in New York all over the United States. In 1984, Hambleton traveled to Europe five times and passed through 24 major cities to paint his figures in the shadow of the night, including Basel.


 

Balzer Projects, Artstübli - Urbane Art & Culture and the Estate of Vera Isler (Verein Blaue Blume) are pleased to present a publication on the artist to accompany the exhibition. Published for the first time and in a limited edition are photographs by Vera Isler (1931-2015) and Thomas Christ (*1953) taken in Basel and New York in the early 1980s. The photographs are accompanied by documentary texts by Thomas Christ, Kate Isler, and Isabel Balzer.
