Kostas Maros

In his exhibition at Artstübli – Kunst & Kultur, Kostas Maros brings together the photographic series Myths of Everyday Life and Cicatrice. Although created in different contexts, both bodies of work revolve around a shared observation: landscapes often speak most clearly through what is no longer visible within them. Maros’ photographs rarely depict people directly. Instead, they reveal subtle traces of human presence embedded in everyday environments and monumental extraction sites alike. Artificial light, fences, abandoned objects or precisely carved mountain surfaces become quiet indicators of actions that have already taken place but remain only partially legible in the present. Seen from today’s perspective, these images resonate strongly with the contradictions of the Anthropocene. Landscapes appear stable and familiar, yet they are shaped by longterm processes of transformation that often remain unnoticed in daily perception. The “myths” suggested in Myths of Everyday Life can therefore also be understood as narratives of continuity that coexist with ongoing ecological change. The marble quarries of Carrara presented in Cicatrice reveal these tensions on a geological scale. At once spectacular and unsettling, they show landscapes marked by extraction while continuing to function as sources of cultural value, economic wealth and aesthetic fascination.
